Stay hydrated in this heat wave in MA & NH!

A couple more days of this heat wave here in NH & MA and then we have dry, cooler weather in store for next week!    In the meantime it is so important to stay well hydrated.    Your body is made up of 60% water and every system in your body depends on water.   It is vital for your hair, skin, nails, controlling body temperature, blood pressure and heart rate.

Here is an excellent article on the importance of keeping kids hydrated in the heat –  http://www.forbes.com/sites/marijkevroomendurning/2013/07/17/summer-dehydration-can-kill-how-to-keep-your-kids-safe-at-home-at-school-and-on-the-field/

I hear from many people that they never touch an ounce of plain water throughout the day because they find is boring.   Try some sparkling water, try adding lemon or lime to your water.   One of my favorite things to add to water is cucumber, so yummy!    There are some great recipes for infused water available here on this website – http://www.fruitinfusedwater.com/#!recipes/c1enr

Still don’t want to drink water?    Eat some fruit!   Fruits are high in water content, so they can help keep you hydrated.   Watermelon and Grapefruit are both just over 90% water!

Here is a great chart showing the top 10 fruits to eat to keep hydrated – http://blog.fooducate.com/2012/09/17/water-content-fruit/

Vegetable can also be a good source of water.   Cucumbers, zucchini, tomatoes and celery are all over 90% water.   Another great chart show the top 10 veggies to eat to keep hydrated – http://blog.fooducate.com/2012/09/18/top-vegetables-by-water-content/

We tend to steer clear of sports drinks in our house because the sugar content is so high.   We prefer to drink SoBe Life Water which is available in so many great flavors, no sugar or artificial sweeteners and 0 calories.   Some of their flavors and their coconut water do have calories so just pay attention to the labels so you know what you are getting.   My personal favorite is the Blood Orange Mango which has added electrolytes.

The next issue with this terrible heat is cooking, its way too hot!   My favorite way to have a meal in this heat is a Shakeology shake.   The whole nutrition can’t be beat and there are so many different flavors and recipe combos out there, the choices are endless.   Prep time and cleanup is under 5 minutes and I’m full for hours.    My kids even enjoy a shake as a snack and I know its much better for them then processed garbage in prepackaged snacks they could be eating.

We also stick with easy things like flax seed wraps with chicken and veggies.   My husband cooks ahead on the grill when it isn’t too terribly hot and we have meals for a few days.

Yogurt smoothies are a favorite for my kids for lunch.   I prepare them with Chobani non-fat Greek Yogurt and frozen mixed berries.   If we have fresh strawberries and blueberries in the house, we use those instead.

What are you favorite recipes in the heat?    Share away!
