HOW TO DISINFECT A WATER WELL

Remove the well cap or the vent pipe or plug if the well is equipped with a sanitary well seal.

Pour 1/2 gallon of household bleach for every 200 feet of 6" Drilled wells (5.25% chlorine) directly into the well.

Connect a hose to a house spigot and run water directly into the well until chlorine odor is present in the water. Chlorine test strip kits are great to use to detect if present.

Shut off water supply to hose and proceed to systematically open each water fixture in the house. Let water run through each fixture until chlorine odor is present. Include both cold and hot water valves.(Test strips and hot water do not work to well unless you fill a cup and dip in still water.) If you have any form of filtration it is recommended to bypass filtration. Leave Sediment filters in line to catch any sediment that may have been disturbed in the well. If you have sediment filters you may have to change more freequently than normal after chlorinating.

Close all valves
Recap the well or replace the vent pipe or plug. Leave all valves closed for a
period of 12 hours or longer (toilets may be flushed if needed).

After 12 hours open the hose spigot outside and discharge water to ground surface or drainage ditch until chlorine odor disappears. Flush every household fixture individually and
let water run until the chlorine odor is gone.(6-8 HOURS depending on the well)

Your well should now be properly disinfected.
DO NOT RUN CHLORINE WATER INTO YOUR SEPTIC SYSTEM
